ADULT: Wingspan up to 22mm.  Despite being variable in patternation and colouring this is generally a distinct looking Tortrix (also known as the Notch-Wing Button) with noticeably notched wings.  The notches however can vary in depth and can be absent so confusion can arise with similar species. Acleris effractana is almost identical and a more northern species with genital examinations needed of most specimens to confirm actual identity.  LARVA: The green, grub-like larvae feed on the leaves and shoots of trees such as Sallow, Poplar and Birch. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light in small numbers.  HABITAT: Parks, woodlands and gardens in and around the foodplant. FLIGHT PERIOD: July to September. STATUS: Fairly common in southern Britain but less so further North.
